Clued into Fashion with Qloo

Recommendation engine Qloo emerged earlier this month from private beta to launch a mobile application that helps consumers discover new things based upon their entire spectrum of tastes. Leveraging a proprietary and patent-pending cross-domain recommender engine, Qloo takes clues from a person's current interests to provide personalized discovery across eight cultural categories: music, film, TV, dining, nightlife, fashion, books and travel. Qloo breaks the mold of single-track recommendation engines that only consider one aspect of a person's interests.
"While single-track recommendation engines can suggest films based on your movie ratings, or music based on the songs you've thumbed up or down; Qloo gets to know the whole you, which is something we've found really matters when suggesting something new to do," said Alex Elias, CEO of Qloo. "By understanding who you are culturally, Qloo helps you spend less time deciding and more time doing."
Qloo's exclusive approach caught on quickly with tastemakers and celebrities, earning fans including Cedric the Entertainer and Danny Masterson. They were part of a group of 25,000+ tastemakers who contributed more than a million inputs into Qloo's private-beta, setting the foundation for the public launch of the Qloo app. Cedric and Masterson have since made investments in the company and have been joined by other entertainment and tech investors in a $3 million Seed funding round that was also announced today.
The Qloo app dives deep into each of the eight verticals, offering context-specific recommendations and suggestions for any occasion or mood. For example, within the dining category, users can find suggestions for "date night," "brunch spots," or "out with friends," all based on their taste. Within books, members can discover personalized suggestions for topics such as "biographies," "books for the coffee table," or "fun reads." Each Qloo recommendation is unique to a user's complete taste-profile, and the app grows smarter with each cultural insight the user adds.
Core features of the Qloo mobile app include:
  • Get Qloos - Users can discover new personalized recommendations based on their current taste across eight categories. Swiping new qloos right or left to give them a thumbs up or down trains the app to give better suggestions. Every suggestion on Qloo features comprehensive details so users have everything they need in one place. Using the Qloo app, members can instantly play songs, watch movie trailers, buy books, look at menus, make reservations, order delivery and much more.
  • Give Qloos - Users can quickly and easily create a gallery of their favorite things -- top five favorite movies, restaurants, books and more, and based upon all of this information, Qloo delivers novel, personalized recommendations.
  • Discover People - Users can find people on Qloo who share their taste in music, film, food and beyond, opening up an entire universe of new recommendations and galleries that they are likely to love. Qloo automatically suggests like-minded TasteBuds based on the user's entire spectrum of tastes. Users can follow their favorite tastemakers to keep their finger on their pulse of new Qloos.
Qloo plans to release an Android application by the end of the year, followed by a tablet version. Although users from across the globe can use Qloo, people in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and London will be able to leverage hyper-local recommendations right away. More cities will be added on an ongoing basis.
The Qloo iPhone app is available now to download for free on the Apple App Store.

Product Development of Clothing

Clothing production is not as exciting as attending fashion week or visiting a fashion designers new brand launch party.  However, the manufacturing process is clearly very important to the apparel industry.  Here at the Blog About Fashion, we like to discuss fashion trends, celebrity spotting, etc., but we also like to on occasion report on important aspects that are behind the scenes in our industry.  Today I wanted to briefly discuss a few important components of the garment production process.

  1. Pattern Making
  2. Pattern Grading
  3. Marker Making

pattern in sewing and fashion design is the paper or cardboard template from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabric before cutting out and assembling (these are often referenced as paper patterns).  The creating of the patterns are typically made by a professional pattern maker.

Pattern grading is an essential part of pattern making. Grading rules determine how patterns increase or decrease to create different sizes.  Fabric type also influences the pattern grading standards.

After the pattern maker develops the first patterns, samples are usually made in one size.  If the sample meets expectations and the clothing companies determines the garment is viable for production, they will then move to the pattern grading step in the product development process.

Patterns initially are made in only one size. In order to produce clothing that fits various body types and sizes, the pattern pieces must be increased or decreased geometrically to create a complete range of sizes. The process of re-sizing the initial pattern is called "grading."  For example, the sample size 10 patterns must be made larger to accommodate sizes 12, 14 and 16 and smaller for sizes 8 and 6.

When the manufacturing company is ready to manufacture the style, all of the sizes of each given pattern piece are arranged into a marker, usually by computer. The marker is then laid on top of the layers of fabric and cut.

Learn more about grading clothing and apparel marker making from the fashion directory website.

    HauteLook Management Changes by Nordstrom

HauteLook, a leading flash sale retailer owned by Seattle-based Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE: JWN), announced yesterday Adam Bernhard is stepping out of the CEO role and day-to-day operations of the business, but will remain with HauteLook in an advisory capacity as Founder. Since Nordstrom purchased HauteLook nearly three years ago, Bernhard helped take the business from just over four million members to more than 14 million, while achieving impressive sales growth.

Terry Boyle will continue to lead the business as President of HauteLook, reporting to Jamie Nordstrom, President of Nordstrom Direct. With HauteLook fully operating as a division of Nordstrom, no CEO will be appointed in Bernhard's place. Boyle has been a key contributor to HauteLook's senior leadership since starting with the company as COO/CFO in 2008, and he has been instrumental in leading the business through significant growth.

"Since Adam started this business in 2007, he has worked tirelessly to build a great team and bring a compelling shopping experience to his customers," said Jamie Nordstrom. "Even after selling the business to us, his commitment to scaling the business and bringing it to profitability never wavered. Adam and his team have more than held up their end of the bargain, and we are thrilled to be in a position where he can pass the reins to Terry and focus on some new opportunities for us."

"HauteLook is performing well—the business is growing, it's profitable, and Adam has built a strong team," Nordstrom continued. "While we're sad to see Adam step out of this role, we look forward to continuing to collaborate with him as we move forward and develop additional capabilities to better serve customers."

"It has been an unbelievable journey to grow HauteLook from a four-person startup into the thriving division of Nordstrom that it is today," said Bernhard. "Although I'm eager for the new opportunities to come, HauteLook will always be my pride and joy."

HauteLook is a key part of Nordstrom's strategy to improve the customer experience by serving customers on their terms however they want to shop. The company is uniquely positioned to offer customers multiple ways to shop with Nordstrom, whether in its full-line stores, on Nordstrom.com, or through its differentiated off-price offering via Nordstrom Rack stores and HauteLook.

About HauteLookAcquired by Nordstrom in March 2011, HauteLook is a place where you'll discover thousands of the top fashion and lifestyle brands at amazing savings. Each day at 8 AM Pacific, shop new sale events featuring the best names in women's and men's fashion and accessories, beauty, kids' apparel and toys, and home decor at up to 75% off. Austin Scarlett Catwalk in Bed

Renowned American fashion designer and “Project Runway” superstar Austin Scarlett turns his bed into a catwalk in this week’s installment of the new video series #ShareTheMattress.  Directed by acclaimed choreographer Larry Keigwin, #ShareTheMattress features well-known creative artists dancing and playing on their beds in tribute to the 10th anniversary of KEIGWIN + COMPANY dance troupe and its first smash hit, 2003’s “Mattress Suite.”

In the video, Scarlett wears black and white polka-dot pajamas, and “makes it work” with his blanket and sheets as a canvas on which he slides, slinks, twirls and poses like a supermodel.  He even wields a robe like a toreador.  Scarlett’s is the second of 10 #ShareTheMattress videos that will roll out through October.  Viewers are encouraged to make and share their own videos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube with the hashtag #ShareTheMattress.  All the videos are available on KEIGWIN + COMPANY’s website.

Keigwin created “Mattress Suite” after watching dancer Nicole Wolcott jump around playfully on her bed.  The pair dragged the mattress onto the floor, developed choreography inspired by Wolcott’s moves and created a narrative that became a full-fledged work set to popular songs and classical music.  The piece was a hit with critics and audiences. KEIGWIN + COMPANY’s 10th Anniversary season runs October 29-November 3, 2013 at New York City’s Joyce Theater.  “Mattress Suite” will be featured during the run.  Tickets are available now.

The next video premieres September 24 with rising indie music star Tobey Lightman.

Takia Ross Key Make-Up Artists for Baltimore Fashion Week

Baltimore Fashion Week is pleased to announce that the search for a Key Make-up Artist has ended.  Takia Ross has been selected and has accepted the position of Key Make-up Artist for Baltimore Fashion Week.

Ms. Ross [Takia] comes to Baltimore Fashion Week with several years of knowledge and a skill set creativity to apply various looks for the event from natural/clean to theatrical/Avant Garde.  The search for a person to take on this responsibility has not been an easy one, especially at almost the last hour.

Takia has assumed the responsibility of interviewing, selecting, and managing a daily make-up team of 15 or more for this year's production.

"Since our Key Make-up Artist of over 3 years, Valeria Tilghman, was not able to participate this year, I became extremely nervous and just put it out of my mind hoping that Val [Valarie Tilghman] would change her mind.  When that dream became a nightmare, that's when I really got butterflies. It was a pleasure to interview Takia and to make the preliminary selection.  Ultimately, due to Val's experience in her field, her experience with Baltimore Fashion Week, and her knowledge of my vision she would be the best person to make the final decision.  Being a woman within the fashion industry, I love to apply make-up, but to select a proper, qualified, and experienced person for this year's event, well, that's Val's lane.  I welcome Takia with open arms to our production family," stated, Sharan Nixon, Founder/CEO of Baltimore Fashion Week.

Takia, will not only be the key artist for this year, but will also work collectively with Valerie Tilghman in future productions of Baltimore Fashion Week.

The interview date has been scheduled and registered make-up artists will be contacted soon.  Takia Ross' can be reached by email for questions or comments at takiarossmua@yahoo.com.

Baltimore Fashion Week is August 8-11, 2013 and will be hosted at the DoubleTree/Hilton at 1726 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, Maryland 21208.  The designer line-up and tickets for Baltimore Fashion Week are currently on the event website - www.baltimore-fashionweek.com.
Baltimore Fashion Week is supported by several sponsors, its top tiered sponsors are the Mass Transit Administration; Hagerstown Outlets; Queenstown Outlets; and Linger Magazine, Title Sponsor for the Emerging Designer Competition.
